Objective

The student knows the key elements of the use of natural resources in northern Finland and especially the special features of the use and management of forests in northern Finland. He is familiar with the regional emphases of the use of natural resources and the contradictions between different uses and understands the importance of the use of natural resources for social and cultural sustainability, including the needs of the traditional way of life and culture in the Sámi areas of Upper Lapland. The student understands the goals and interactions between forestry and other interest groups using nature.

Content

The studies focus on the introduction of industries based on the use of natural resources in northern Finland and the activities of nature conservation. In addition, the objectives of each industry's activities, their socio-economic and cultural impacts in their respective areas of operation, and the relationship with other activities competing for the same resources are reviewed. The aim is to outline the advantages or disadvantages of different industries for other actors in the same area. At the same time, it is considered whether possible conflicts can be prevented or resolved, and the solution methods used in the problems are introduced. The topics covered are: forestry and its ecological features in Lapland, reindeer husbandry, nature conservation, mining, tourism, energy management, and the Sámi people and culture.
