Objective

After successful completion of the course, participants will be able
1) to find relevant information in German on academic subjects on the internet
2) to apply reading and problem solving strategies (formerly acquired on the courses German: Reading Comprehension or Legal German: Reading Comprehension) to extensive academic texts in German
3) to reach at least the proficiency level B2 of the six-level scale of the CEFR (the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Execution methods

Self-study.

Accomplishment methods

Finding and presenting a relevant text. Reading and writing a summary in English or Finnish.

Content

Participants are required to find a relevant academic text related to their main subject of study (social sciences, education, law, etc.). The text is to be ca. 12 pages long if transferred to paper in standard font size 11. The expected level is B2, typical of popular science. The text is then presented to the course teacher for clearance. After receiving clearance, participants will read the text at home, writing a summary in English or Finnish. The summary is to be 2 to 3 pages long, not counting cover sheet, table of content, etc. Finally, both text and summary are handed in on paper. Students who are on an exchange or an internship in a German-speaking country, may complete this course, writing a 2-3 page summary of a text, which they are required to read for their studies / internship. In this case, the text does not have to be presented to the responsible teacher beforehand. Students may hand in a copy or print-out of the original text along with their summary after their return to the University of Lapland.
