Sisältö
This workshop has for purpose to fuse Life Drawing with the body expression as
explored in contemporary dance. It will begin by watching an excerpt of « Rosas
danst Rosas » by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, a Belgian choreographer whose
seminal work has shown how apparently meaningless body movements, or microactions
of the everyday life, can become the ground for building a whole and
complex choreography. The workshop will aim to turn the model into a dancer, but a
dancer whose choreography is based on simple or petty movements. The mere
impulse of standing up from a chair, for instance, might form the thread leading to a
full choreographic chain of actions (as we can see in « Rosas dans Rosas »). What
is meant here by a choreographic chain of actions is not the narrative-like rendering
of a meaningful set of movements, but the turning of meaningless actions into a
choreography devoid of any narrative intent. The goal is here to draw the human
body in one of its extremest and most fascinating occurrences, which is
choreography.
No professional model will be required, no more than nude modelling. Students will
be modelling each one at one’s turn, and on a voluntary basis. The students will be
asked to prepare the choreographies they will display as models beforehand. The
choreographies should be basic and short (their goal is to be drawn, not to be
performed on stage), but creative nevertheless. The use of props might be needed,
and documenting about contemporary dance might help.
The drawings will mix small quick drawings with large long duration drawings of the
movements made by the models, along with sequences of sketches reproducing the
complete chains of actions performed.
A small exhibition of the works will be considered at the end of the workshop
