Tavoitteet

The module allows students to familiarize themselves with a variety of topical issues in Public International Law.

Toteutustavat

The module is available both in fall and spring term but the ways of organizing it as well as the ECTS available may vary.

Suoritustavat

The module may include lectures, seminars and other events providing opportunities for students to familiarize themselves with various aspects of the evolving Public International Law. It may also include written assignments and/or examinations.

Sisältö

The contents of the module are based on the recent developments within Public International Law, research projects related to them, and the personal interests of students participating in the module.

In the seminar, each participant will give a presentation (with PPT slides) about the essay. More detailed instructions about the essay will be given in the lectures.

Opetusmenetelmät

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course on children's rights covers the general legal landscape of children's rights protection, including the relevant legal instruments, the principle of the best interests of the child, and more specific human rights norms such as the right to respect for family life and protection against exploitation and violence. After this course, students will have an overall understanding of the field of children's rights within the larger context of human rights law. The course will be taught as contact teaching, including lectures, and an individual essay assignment that will be presented at a final seminar.

CONTENTS:

DAY 1: Children’s rights
• Definitions, forms and scope
• Parental rights and duties

DAY 2: Legal framework
• Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC)
• Other human rights instruments (UNDR, ECHR, Brussels II, Lanzarote)

DAY 3: Child-specific human rights norms
• Best interests of the child (BIC)
• Right of participation (right to be heard)
• Right to respect for family life

DAY 4: Specific issues (case studies)
• Alternative care
• Adoption
• Protection against exploitation and violence (Lanzarote Convention)
