Tavoitteet

After completion of the course the student is able to
- recognise the aims, forms and nature of sociological research
- identify and use social theories and sociological concepts when building arguments about social worlds, relations and environments
- do a sociological analysis of different kinds of mobilities and mobility experiences as part of responsible planning of tourism and leisure environments
- read, write, and draw from academic texts in English as well as to draw from observational work in urban spaces
- see how class, gender, and forms of travel affect environments of sustainable mobilities and motilities.

Oppimateriaalit

Course readings which are the same in regular course and independent study will be available at the start of the course. They consist of articles, book chapters, and books, but may include also audio-visual sources. Course readings deal with sociological aspects of tourism, leisure, and sports in contemporary and future society, locally and globally.

- Flipped Classroom and Lectures (2 op);
- A field assignment (1 op);
- Exam (2 op).
- Alternatively, an entirely independently executed exam on course literature (5 op)
- Please, note, that unfortunately the international application initiated by the University of Jyväskylä, with three other universities, did not receive funding so we shall not collaborate with sports studies as planned. However, explorations on alternative forms of co-working are on-going.

• The course is available also as an independent study. You will receive guiding questions and other tips for reading at the start of the course which will help you focus on essential issues in the reading process before taking the Exam.
• The course readings will be the same for all students, yet those who take the regular course will need to answer fewer questions that those who choose the independent study alternative. In regular course, majority of the readings is labelled “oheiskirjallisuus” [supporting or adjacent literature], supporting or adjacent literature, while in the proper book exam all course literature needs to be read.
• In terms of time use and requirements, the course is a flexible one: it will not be difficult to pass the course with less time and effort, yet if you enjoy challenges and can concentrate on this course, you can utilise the possibility to study sociological issues of tourism and leisure in more depth.
• The generic skills that this course supports are the abilities to investigate and plan aspects of travelling, leisure, and sports with the help of frameworks that sociological theories provide.

Arviointikriteerit, tyydyttävä (1)

Fail (0): No demonstration an understanding of the nature of social sciences and the course contents, scarce or no participation in class, no ability to analyze these contents in relation to real-life phenomena of tourism and leisure experiences and environments.

Sufficient (1): Demonstration of a minimum understanding of the nature of social analysis and the course contents, minimum participation in class, and an emerging ability to analyze these contents in relation to real-life phenomena of tourism and leisure experiences and environments.

Satisfactory (2): Demonstration of a thin, narrow or selective understanding of the nature of social analysis and the course contents, passive participation in class, and some ability to analyze these contents in relation to real-life phenomena of tourism and leisure experiences and environments.

Arviointikriteerit, hyvä (3)

Good (3): Demonstration of good understanding of the nature of social sciences and the course contents, as well participation in class, and a good ability to analyze these contents in relation to social realities in tourism and leisure experiences and environments.

Very good (4): Demonstration of very good understanding of the nature of social sciences and the course contents, as well active participation in class, and a very good ability to analyze these contents in relation to social realities in tourism and leisure experiences and environments.

Excellent (5): Demonstration of holistic and deep understanding of the nature of social sciences and the course contents, as well active participation in class, and an excellent ability to analyze these contents critically and creatively in relation to real-life phenomena of tourism and leisure experiences and environments.

Esitietovaatimukset

At least two years of university studies of or at least three years of studies in a school of applied sciences.

Lisätiedot

Please, note, that the two lecture weeks 2 and 3 are intensive studying weeks with lectures in class, readings to read, and small assignments. During the weeks 4 and 5 you will do a small group work and present on the 31st January. After this interactive period, you will have 2-4 weeks to read the course readings and reread your lecture notes before taking an e-exam. The exam for this course will be available for bookings first around in mid-January, after the lectures.
If you have any concerns about the course beforehand, please, do not hesitate to contact teacher by 13th December. It is good to plan ahead before the course starts.
Please inform teacher by 13th December if you will take the course in the form of independent studying.
The Moodle platform for the course will opened before Christmas break. Some readings are already available by then.
