Tavoitteet

After successful completion, participants will understand the culture of the German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) in contrast to their own culture. They will have an understanding of the dynamics between the three countries, and of their historic background. They will be able to identify differences between these countries’ mindsets, communicational behaviors, habits, etc. and will be able to adapt to them during a prolonged stay (e.g. exchange or internship).

Suoritustavat

Participation (75 per cent) in contact teaching, lecture journal and comparison of one country’s culture to participant’s own.

Sisältö

Short introduction to basic models used in the field of Intercultural Communication. Lectures and exercises on history as collective memory, central cultural concepts, communication style and politeness concept, behavior at work and aspects of everyday life.Individual and group exercises assessing and comparing the target cultures to participants’ cultures.

Oppimateriaalit

Handouts will be provided by the teacher. The focus of this course is on intercultural communication – what do I need to know to get along with the Germans. Wikipedia level background information on the German-speaking countries is required.
