Teaching methods

TC and Guided practice
The students, set their own personal goals for learning, and perform continuous self-assessment. Students use eWorkbook in their practical training. The Medication passport supports pharmacotherapy studies.
All other courses and practical trainings must be passed/accepted before the beginning of the Guided Practice in Evidence-based Nursing.
Nurse's Core Competences (180 ECTS) National Exam (Theory and Calculation) must be passed before the beginning of the Guided Practice in Evidence-based Nursing.

The working time of the students in guided practice is always 40 hours/week, of which 38.45 hours/week are to be done in the guided training placement. Rest of time is allocated for the written assignments (goals, self assessment) related to the guided practice.The working shifts of the whole guided practice period are planned on the schedule. The working hours which occur on holidays during the weekdays (on the so called the flexible holidays) are not to compensated. In case of several holidays during the guided practice, the guided practice period is prolonged. Sickness absences must always be notified as soon as possible both to the guided practice unit and to the clinical instructor or the senior lecturer in charge of the guided practice. The replacement/compensation for the absences are to be negotiated with the clinical supervisor and the senior lecturer in charge of the guided practice

· You can use the nursing care process to document a patient's nursing care; assess the patient's need for nursing (care), plan and implement care, evaluate the outcome of care, and produce a summary of nursing care.

Fail

· You lack the professional identity of a nurse or know how to work in accordance with the ethical principles of nursing, current legislation and information guidance.
· You cannot plan, implement or evaluate evidence-based nursing work safely and reliably.
· You are unable to make clinical decisions based on evidence.
· You do not understand the importance of evidence-based recommendations and consistent practices in patient care nor do you know how to apply them in nursing work.
· You are unable to respond to the patient's needs in accordance with the nursing process in collaboration with the patient, relatives and other social and health care professionals.
· You cannot use the nursing process to document a patient's care; you fail to be able to assess the patient's need for nursing (care), plan and implement care and evaluate the outcome of care and produce a summary of nursing.
· You cannot evaluate, monitor or document the results of a consistent nursing practice.
· You are not able to ensure the quality of nursing as a member of the work community.

Assessment methods and criteria

EVALUATION OF GUIDED PRACTICE
The competences in nursing:

- Clinical Competence in Nursing

The senior lecturer in charge of the guided practice is responsible for the final grade mark and evaluation made up of the students self evaluation, his/her clinical supervisors evaluation, and peer assessment dialogical discussion.

The evaluation scale is Pass Fail.
The feedback from the clinical practice will be taken into consideration when grading the whole module.
The mark Fail is based on the criteria of professional, cooperative and developmental qualities. Thus, one of the following criteria is sufficient for the mark Fail
- Professional Competence
- Cooperation Competence
- Developmental and Developing Competence

Criteria for the grade “Fail” of Guided practice:

Student can fail the guided clinical practice based on the assessment criteria of professional, co-operational or development competencies.
Guided practice can be assessed as a “Fail” based on a single criterium in the context of the following competencies:

Professional competence:
- neglect of ethical principles, regulations, legislation,
- endangering patient safety,
- insufficient knowledge and skills in nursing

Co-operation competence:
- drawbacks in co-operation competence
- non-commitment in care relationships
- non-collegiality in action
- essential deficiency in professional interaction

Development and developing competence:
- lack of motivation and self-initiative
- lack of purposefulness
- unplanned training/guided practice
- drawbacks in self-assessment and reflection
- drawbacks in working life (employment) skills

GUIDED PRACTICE competences - evaluation

Grades: Passed/Failed

Methods:Self-assessment, clinical supervisors’ assessment, peer assessment by dialogic discussion

Competences:
Learning process of the student
Attainment of the student’s self-set competence goals, purposefulness, self-directedness, information/data retrieval, and justifying the action taken.
Self- and peer-assessment in the learning process, and feedback from the supervisors.

Ethical competence:
Compliance with confidentiality, secrecy and privacy protection policies, and legislative issues, acting according to the values and principles of professional ethics, compliance with safety regulations at work, taking responsibility for own action, therapeutic attitude towards the client/patient/family/cooperation and study networks. Responsibility for own professional development.

Co-operation and communication competence:
Ability to start and maintain professional communication at work: patient and client relationships, employee skills, collegiality, team-work skills, pair work skills, multi-professional work skills, co-operation with care and service units/institutions, organisations and networks. Co-operation and interaction is focused on the main objective/mission of the unit.

Mentoring and Counseling Competence:
Ability to mentor and counsel different patients/clients, their next-of-kin and groups. Supports and guides the client in self-care and management of personal health problems and concerns. Health promotion competence.
