Objective

After successful completion, participants will understand the culture of the German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) in contrast to their own culture. They will have an understanding of the dynamics between the three countries, and of their historic background. They will be able to identify differences between these countries’ mindsets, communicational behaviors, habits, etc. and will be able to adapt to them during a prolonged stay (e.g. exchange or internship).

Content

Short introduction to basic models used in the field of Intercultural Communication. Lectures and exercises on history as collective memory, central cultural concepts, communication style and politeness concept, behavior at work and aspects of everyday life. Individual and group exercises assessing and comparing the target cultures to participants’ cultures.
