After completing this course, the doctoral researcher is able to:
- understand contemporary Arctic research and the typical ways of setting research questions within different disciplines
- position their own research topic in the broader field of Arctic research
- identify themselves as a member of the doctoral programme’s research community and the Arctic research community

The course is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the diverse field of contemporary multidisciplinary Arctic research (course focus themes vary annually). Doctoral researchers from all fields benefit from this course as it familiarizes the participants with a range of disciplines, approaches and methodologies relevant to contemporary Arctic social and sustainability sciences.

The doctoral researcher demonstrates a clear understanding of contemporary Arctic research and the typical approaches to formulating research questions within different disciplines. They can position their own research topic within the broader context of Arctic research, showing awareness of how it connects to ongoing debates and research in the field. Additionally, the doctoral researcher identifies themselves as an active member of both the doctoral programme’s research community and the Arctic research community, engaging with peers and contributing to these networks.
Fail
The doctoral researcher does not demonstrate a clear understanding of contemporary Arctic research or struggles to identify typical ways of setting research questions within different disciplines. They are unable to position their research topic within the broader Arctic research field or fail to show how their work connects with ongoing research. Additionally, they do not identify themselves as a member of the doctoral programme’s research community or the Arctic research community, showing little to no engagement with either group.
