Content

The course applies the multidisciplinary theoretical discussions on naturecultures to the key questions regarding the politics of nature, human-animal relations and the material cultures. The student studies independently the key theoretical texts of the field and familiarizes with the current applications in the research of naturecultures. Students are to develop a naturecultural imagination – that is, an understanding of the mundane character of the environmental destruction, human-nature relationships, the multispecies approach for the more sustainable future.

Teaching methods

Itsenäisesti tehtävä kirjallisuusessee.

Jokaisesta kirjasta tehdään oma esseensä (pituudeltaan noin 1 500 – 3 000 sanaa).

Esseessä tulee vastata kunkin kirjan osalta seuraaviin kysymyksiin:

1. Asetelma
• Mitä kirjassa luvataan tehdä? Mihin kysymykseen tai kysymyksiin siinä vastataan?
• Miten kirjan kohteena olevan asian tai ilmiön merkitys perustellaan? Miksi aihe on yhteiskunnallisesti ja tutkimuksellisesti tärkeä?
• Millainen on kirjan etenemisjärjestys? Millainen työnjako eri lukujen välillä on?

2. Argumentit / tulokset / keskeinen sisältö
Keskity tässä osiossa kuvailemaan kirjan sisältöä seuraavien kysymysten avulla:
• Mitkä ovat kirjan keskeiset argumentit ja siinä esille tuodut asiat? Mitkä ovat keskeiset teoreettiset käsitteet, joiden avulla kyseessä olevaa ilmiötä kirjassa tarkastellaan? Miten nämä käsitteet auttavat ajattelemaan ja käsittämään tarkasteltavaa ilmiötä?

3. Arviointi
• Miten kirja onnistuu täyttämään tehtävänsä tai vastaamaan alussa esitettyihin kysymyksiin?
• Miten kirja on kirjoitettu? Olisiko kirjan voinut kirjoittaa toisin? (Sisällöllinen, rakenteellinen ja tyylillinen arvio.)
• Mitä opit kirjasta? Muuttiko sen lukeminen ajatteluasi? Mikä kirjassa oli sinusta kiinnostavinta, mitkä asiat erityisesti tekevät siitä hyödyllisen? Millaiselle yleisölle suosittelisit ko. kirjan lukemista?

Anna esseelle kirjan sisältöä luonnehtiva tai kiteyttävä pääotsikko, ja käytä myös väliotsikoita (esim. tehtävän jäsennystä noudattaen tai vaihtoehtoisesti sisällöllisin väliotsikoin).

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Fail (0): Performance is highly deficient or erroneous. The work may be based on serious misunderstandings.

Sufficient (1): The author has identified some key concepts and aspects in the research field. Performance is lacking in scope, superficial, or corresponds poorly to the assignment. The author merely lists things out of context, or addresses them one-sidedly. The work may contain errors or obscurities.

Satisfactory (2): The author has identified the key concepts and aspects in the research field. The performance mainly repeats the content of the course or addresses them one-sidedly.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Good (3): The author has addressed the issue comprehensively. Performance corresponds to the assignment, manifesting skills to analyse and justify the content of the course. The work may contain some deficiencies.

Very good (4): The author has addressed the issue comprehensively. Performance manifest comprehension, insight, and skills to critically analyse and argue the content of the course.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Excellent (5): Performance delineates an extensive whole and the author can apply knowledge in a multifaceted way or place it in various contexts. The work manifests independency and insight, and it is a flawless entity that involves justified thinking or critical contemplation. The work is well written and implemented.
