Objective
By means of mobile gaming the student: 1. Understands the structure and policies of prehospital emergency care. 2. Applies the methods of systematic patient encountering and assessment in a virtual environment. 3. Chooses the appropriate advanced level prehospital emergency care treatment options and applies them to the patient. 4. Encounters an internal medicine patient in accordance with the advanced level emergency care obligations 5. Encounters a patient with altered level of consciousness in accordance with the advanced level emergency care 6. Encounters a trauma patient in accordance with the advanced level emergency care obligations
Methods of completion
Every section of this course has to be passed: 1. Tutorials (Game based learning in prehospital emergency medical care) 2. 60% correct on every scenario (including the virtual simulations and add-on questions) - Encountering an internal medicine patient (respiratory problems, arrhythmias, chest-pain) - Ecountering a patient with altered level of consciousness (intoxications + other causes) - Encountering a trauma patient 3. 70% correct on advanced level emergency care evaluation of competence section (virtual simulations + add-on questions) 4. Feedback questionnaire about game-based learning
Methods of completion
Learning by playing gives you a lot more freedom. You are not bound in a certain place or time. This course will operate in Oamk's Moodle platform and the scenarios will be accomplished with a mobile gaming app called Stay and Play, produced by Breathe Mobile Solutions Oy. The mobile app runs in Android and iOS operating systems so you can use your own smart device for game learning. * Every task on this course will be carried out by mobile application. * You will get instant feedback about your level of competence after every completed scenario * You can replay the scenarios as many times as you want and when you are satisfied with the results, you can send the result to the teacher. * Attending this course requires installing the Stay and Play mobile application on your smart device * You can play freely as much as you want. This enables constant self-studying and rehearsing. * You will get learning analytics based feedback about your level of expertise throughout the whole course.
Content
This course consists of virtual emergency care scenarios, in which you make decisions about patient assessment and care by playing an educational mobile game. The scenarios are designed in accordance with the advanced level emergency care obligations. You will get an exact and structured feedback after every scenario. In the end of the course there is also an evaluation of competence and the student feedback sections. Content areas - Game based learning, tutorial games, emergency medical service - Systematic operating models in prehospital emergency care - Encountering an internal medicine patient - Ecountering a patient with altered level of consciousness - Encountering a trauma patient - Evaluation of competence and feedback The tasks in the learning game correspond to the reality of emergency care. Game content is based on reliable evidence and up-to-date guidances of prehospital emergency care.
Materials
The course is delivered entirely online on Moodle platform and Stay and play mobile app. Assessment is based on learning analytics provided by Stay and Play application. On the Moodle platform you will find instructions on how to complete the course and and the reading areas of the course.
Qualifications
This course is suitable for students in prehospital emergency care program and in nursing program. It is strongly recommended that at least two semesters of study (120 credits) have been completed before the start of the course. The level of the course is demanding and provides excellent preparation for the advanced level prehospital care examinations. It is recommended that you have studied basic level prehospital emergency care and/ or intensive care before attending this course. On this course you can deepen your knowledge of systematic assessment of the patient (ABCDE), ECG interpretation (ischemia and arrythmias), medication, field sedation, ventilation and oxygenation with different device, ACS protocols, analgesia and advanced level prehospital care procedures. The course is also suitable for qualified basic level paramedics and nurses who work in prehospital emergency care, emergency departments or intensive care.
