Objective
After completing this course, the doctoral researcher is able to:
- recognise and analyse key research ethical questions
- formulate ethical research plans and responses to ethical challenges by applying key ethical theories and approaches
- recognise and understand key ethical principles guiding research and how they apply to research work
- understand the Finnish Responsible Conduct of Research guidelines, processes for dealing with research misconduct, and processes for applying research license or ethical review
- identify rights and responsibilities as a researcher
- understand how ethical decisions and choices influence society and research community.

Content
Doctoral researchers are expected to reflect on the ethical issues and challenges in their own research and find solutions to them.
Teaching methods
This is a national online course on research ethics, taught online. You can take either 1 study credit or 2 study credits. The 2-credit workload comprises 46 hours of independent study and 8 hours of workshops with compulsory attendance. 1 ETCS course comprises of 28 hours of independent online work.
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
Pass
The doctoral researcher identifies and analyzes the key ethical issues in research and relates them to their own research environment. The doctoral researcher applies ethical theories and approaches in their research plan and proposes well-founded solutions to ethical challenges. The doctoral researcher demonstrates an understanding of a researcher’s rights and responsibilities and reflects on how ethical choices impact the research community and society. The doctoral researcher shows competence regarding the Finnish Code of Conduct for Research Integrity, the principles of applying for research permits, and the ethical review process, understanding their relevance to their own research. All assignments are submitted on time and are of high quality, comprehensive, and coherent. The doctoral researcher reflects on their learning during the course and demonstrates that their understanding has deepened.
Fail
The doctoral researcher does not identify or analyze key research ethics issues or does so superficially. The doctoral researcher fails to present concrete or well-founded solutions to ethical challenges in research and does not demonstrate an understanding of ethical theories or principles. The doctoral researcher does not clearly recognize the rights and responsibilities of a researcher, nor does the doctoral researcher show an understanding of how ethical decisions affect the research community or society. The doctoral researcher demonstrates insufficient knowledge of, for example, Finnish Code of Conduct for Research Integrity, applying for research permits, or ethical review processes. Assignments are submitted late or are incomplete, one-sided, or full of inaccuracies.
