Objective

After completing this course, the doctoral researcher is able to:
- understand the basics of research data management
- understand the research data management services of the University of Lapland
- draw up a data management plan.

Content

The topics are data management, information security, and data protection. This course is aimed at doctoral students of Lapland Univesity.

Location and time

The course can be studied independently during the academic year 2025–2026. The final date to submit the assignments is 31 May 2026.

Completion of the CSC online course, familiarisation with the practices of data management, data security and data protection in the Lapland University Consortium and preparation of a data management plan.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Pass
The doctoral researcher applies and illustrates aspects and basic concepts of data management in their data management plan in relation to their own research data. They demonstrate familiarity with the data management services provided by the University of Lapland and the fundamentals of data management. The doctoral researcher shows an understanding of the legal issues and data security aspects relevant to the handling of their data. They justify the choices made in the plan. Overall, the data management plan is coherent and comprehensive, though it may contain minor inaccuracies.

Fail
The doctoral researcher lists or briefly mentions aspects and basic concepts of data management but does not elaborate on or illustrate them in relation to their own research data in the data management plan. The doctoral researcher does not demonstrate familiarity with the data management services provided by the University of Lapland or has only a narrow understanding of them. They present legal issues related to data management as well as aspects of data security but do not apply them to the handling of their own data. Overall, the data management plan is superficial, and the choices made are not justified.
