Objective
Having completed this study unit
· You understand the basics of macroeconomics and know some of the key macroeconomic indicators.
· You understand the fundamentals of micro and macroeconomics - supply and demand and the connection to market
prices from the tourism and hospitality industry perspective.
· You understand tourism both as a concept and as a phenomenon at local, regional, national and international levels.
· You acknowledge the economic, social, cultural, environmental and political impacts of tourism.
· You acknowledge the historic development and the current situation of the tourism industry in Finland and Lapland.
· You understand different forms of tourism.
· You are familiar with tourism statistics on regional, national and international levels.
· You understand connections and impacts between international economics and tourism and hospitality industry in
global economy.

Location and time
The study unit starts at week 37 and it ends at week 47.
Lectures are organised in classrooms.
Materials
The course materials are introduced the Moodle.
Teaching methods
The implementation of the course progresses gradually in a classroom format. The implementation emphasizes self-directed and active learning (flipped classroom). The course includes familiarization with learning materials and source materials, independent exercises and learning tasks, and collaboration.
Exam schedules
The group assignment is due to week 43.
The exam is during the week 45.
The group assignment presentations are during the week 47.
Retake for the exam is during the week 48.
Student workload
The scope of the study module is 5 ECTS credits, which means about 133 hours of work. Working is in lectures, exercises, group work, and independent and self-directed studying.
