Objective
After successful completion of the course, participants will successfully
1) developed the ability to follow independent Russian media in Russian over a prolonged period of time
2) follow the main currents of events
3) practice and develop their listening comprehension in Russian
4) practice and develop their capacity for critical analysis.

Accomplishment methods
Keeping a regular diary about the main news for a period of eight weeks.
Content
This course can be completed either at the University of Lapland (during any period) or during a student exchange or an internship in a Russian-speaking country such as Kazakhstan or the Baltic States. Participants follow news for eight consecutive weeks, watching at least 24 different broadcasts. Participants may watch the Yle Novosti news in Finland, or Russian-language channels on YouTube as well as other independent news media in Russian (talk about sources with the teacher beforehand). They keep a diary, taking down the main news of the day, and following the developments over the chosen period. The diary will be written in Finnish or in English. The diary is to be a total of 10-12 pages long (standard font size 11). They also produce a vocabulary of the central terminology used. It is to be 2-3 pages. The deadline for returning the diary is agreed in advance with the teacher.

Russian 1-4, or equivalent courses. A reading comprehension course (TVEN0201 or OVEN0710 and OVEN0810) is recommended.
