Upon completing this module, the student should be able to discuss in depth various questions related to space law.

Execution methods

The module is available both in fall and spring term but the ways of organizing it may vary.

In spring term, a seminar on space law is normally arranged. All students attending the seminar need to have familiarized themselves with space law prior to the seminar by completing a lecture course or a literature examination in this module.

Accomplishment methods

The module may include lectures, seminars, written assignments and / or examinations.

The core of international space law; launch services and space transportation; satellite communications; satellite navigation; remote sensing; manned spaceflight; environmental aspects.

Teaching methods

The module consists of 3 parts (A-C). It is recommended that you study parts A & B simultaneously as they are planned to support each other.

A) 2 ECTS: Follow a set of virtual lectures (more detailed information on the Moodle workspace "Public International Law Courses in English") and take the lecture test in the electrical exam service called EXAM (constantly available). You are allowed to retake the lecture test twice but this can only be done after the results of your previous attempt are registered, i.e. you will not be able to retake the test immediately.

B) 1 ECTS: written examination on
- von der Dunk Frans G., Advanced Introduction to Space Law (2020).
The written examination is available as an e-exam in the electrical exam service called EXAM (constantly available).

C) 2 ECTS: Seminar including a written assignment and its presentation. NB. The seminar will be arranged in spring term 2026. Attending the seminar requires that either part A or B is completed. Minimum group size: 8 students. If you wish to attend the seminar, please send an email to prof. Viikari (lotta.viikari@ulapland.fi) by the end of January 2026.
