Accomplishment methods

After completing the course, the student will be able to analyse and critically evaluate the use of theories in social work research, evaluate and compare theories in social work research and their applicability to their own research, apply theories, concepts, and philoso-phies in their research.

The course is of 5 credits which corresponds to 135 hours of studying. The course will be assessed as passed or failed. To pass the course, the student must study the lecture material and the course literature of their choice and submit the assignments through which the student must demonstrate that they have achieved the above-mentioned objectives and learning outcomes of the course.

Completion of the course must be agreed with your dissertation supervisor. All completions from the study course are accepted by the own university, i.e. the study course does not have a separate teacher.

It is recommended to send the thesis supervisor a de-scription of the course, instructions for assignments and a list of the content of the course.

Content

The course introduces theoretical foundations in social work research and the application of theories. Theories and theoretical discussions are examined from the perspective of the student's own doctoral research work. During the course, students will analyse and critically evaluate different theories and their role in research as well as outline the theoretical and philosophical framework applicable to their own research.

The course consists of video lectures on theories and theoretical discussions in social work, course literature and assignments. The course can be completed in the DigiCampus online environment. The completion of the course and the timetable will be agreed with the dissertation supervisor who will also assess and register the course. You may choose when to complete the course. The module is intended for all social work doctoral researchers, but it is most useful from the very beginning of your doctoral research.

The aim of the course is to strengthen the students’ general research skills by teaching them to apply theo-ries, concepts and philosophies employed in the field of social work research in their own dissertation. The aim is also to enhance the student's ability to critically evaluate and analyse theories.
