Having completed this study unit
• You are able to recognise legal factors, issues and challenges in human resource management and in different phases of the employment lifecycle.
• You know the main content of the sector’s essential labour legislation and collective agreements and can apply them.
• You know the basics of data protection and protection of privacy at a workplace.
• You recognise the role of payroll in HRM and know the main legal duties related to payroll.
• You are aware of the main principles of payroll calculations and duties
• You recognise the role and meaning of legal issues in human resource management.

Content:
• main principles of employment and labour law (incl. employer’s and employee’s rights and duties)
• legal factors in recruiting
• legal factors in employment relationship
• termination of employment contract
• protection of privacy at a workplace (GDPR and Act on protection of privacy in working life)
• payroll as a function and legal duties related to payroll (e.g. income register, reporting and taxes)
• the main principles of payroll calculations (e.g. salaries/wages, collective agreement, hours, deductions and tax card)
• role of legal issues in HRM

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Level 1
The principles of essential labour legislation
You are able to name some legal factors, issues and challenges in human resource management in different phases of the employment lifecycle.
You know the basics of the sector’s labour legislation and collective agreements and are able to list the main duties and rights of both an employer and employee.
You are able to solve simple employment and labour law cases by leaning to the given instructions and material.
You are able to recognize the role and meaning of legal issues in human resource management.

Level 2
The principles of essential labour legislation
You are able to describe some legal factors, issues and challenges in human resource management in different phases of the employment lifecycle.
You know the basics of the sector’s labour legislation and collective agreements and are able to describe the main duties and rights of both an employer and employee.
You are able to recognize problems in a case, choose regulations, apply them and give a conclusion.
You know the role and meaning of legal issues in human resource management.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Level 3

You understand legal factors, issues and challenges as part of human resource management and the employment lifecycle.
You understand the basics of the sector’s labour legislation and collective agreements and are able to describe the duties and rights of both an employer and employee.
You are able to recognize problems in a case, choose relevant regulations, apply them and give both correct and justified conclusion.
You understand the role and meaning of legal issues in human resource management.

Level 4
The principles of essential labour legislation
You have a good understanding of the legal factors, issues and challenges as part of human resource management and the employment lifecycle.
You have a command of the basics of the sector’s labour legislation and collective agreements and understand the interrelation of the duties and rights of an employer and employee.
You have a good understanding of a case and its details, you are able to choose relevant regulations, fluently apply them and give a justified conclusion.
You have a good understanding of the role and meaning of legal issues in human resource management.

Level 5

You have a command of the legal factors, issues and challenges as part of human resource management and the employment lifecycle.
You have a holistic understanding of the sector’s labour legislation and collective agreements.
You have an overall understanding of a case at hand and its details, you are able to choose relevant regulations, fluently apply them and give a justified conclusion.
You are able to proactively take legal issues in account as part of human resources management.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

PASS/FAILED:
You are aware of the main principles of payroll calculations and duties.
You are familiar with salary calculations on the basic level.
