Location and time

The study unit is scheduled for the summer semester 2025. The study unit can be started on June 1st, 2025. The Moodle platform opens a week before .. The learning tasks of the course must be returned by 31 July 2025. Assignments returned after this will not be evaluated.
Assignments returned within the deadline will be evaluated with feedback by August 31st, 2025. The approved completion of the study unit will be marked in Peppi as summer studies.

Exam schedules

The study unit does not include an exam. Nursing English competence is demonstrated through learning tasks and vocabulary tests.

In the study unit, the student can develop their own skills related to academic and communication skills needed in nursing studies and work.

Completion alternatives

The course is completed independently with the help of learning tasks and tests.
In the learning tasks, the student demonstrates both oral and written knowledge of nursing themes related English.

Content scheduling

The course is grouped into 6 different themes:
1. Reading a scientific article
2. Diseases, conditions and symptoms
3. Polite interaction
4. Medical terminology and anatomy
5. Patient guidance
6. History and reporting

In addition to initial and final self-assessments, the course has four (4) learning tasks that must be completed and returned:1. Reading a scientific article related to nursing work using the skimming technique. 2. Anatomy tutorial and medical terminology task 4. Patient guidance task 5. Patient anamnesis and reporting task.

In addition, in relation to all themes of the course, the student must complete a digital vocabulary test.

The duration of the course is 1.6. 2025 - 31.7.2025.

Further information

The student must have the necessary equipment for producing video and audio material, as well as suitable, up-to-date software for processing digital learning material. The course cannot be completed using e.g. a smartphone alone. The student must verify their identity in accordance with the instructions at the beginning of the study period.
Every task to be returned involves demonstrating both oral and written competence. Performances in which video material in accordance with the instructions has not been used by the student will not be accepted.

Assessment methods and criteria

Demonstrating nursing English oral and written competence with study unit -related assignments and digital tests. The student must reach an approved level in all tasks of the study unit in order to complete the 5 credits.
Assignments must be completed and returned by 31.7.2025.. Assignments returned after this will not be evaluated.
The teacher may ask the student to supplement an assignment returned within the deadline.

Assessment criteria, fail (0)

Fail
Student’s performance is below the requirements for Grade 1. The content is not correct for the situation because the student does not know the correct words and expressions or how to apply them. Student is unable to understand the instructions to the various assignments independently. The language used and the grammatical forms are incorrect to the extent where the output is mostly incomprehensible. Vastly incorrect pronunciation makes it impossible to communicate in English. There is no interaction on any level in English and the student is not able to demonstrate acceptable competence in the assignments. The English language the student produces lacks individual flavor and it is evident that the assignments have been completed by using merely digital language aids (direct translation etc.). Spoken and written competence do not correspond at all.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

T1
Student communicates with difficulties in word choices, grammar and structures. Assignments are made and submitted, but instructions have been misunderstood or omitted somewhat. Grammatical structures are very basic and often incorrect. Communicated sentences are short and simple making the speech fragmented and sometimes difficult to understand. There are major problems in pronunciation, word and sentence stress and together with intonation challenges the language produced may be very difficult to understand. The student is able to complete tasks and to demonstrate coping in English only barely. The English language the student produces lacks individual flavor and there many visible, evident traces to the use of digital language aids present. Spoken and written competence do not correspond in the assignments.

T2
Student communicates in English with shortcomings in the use of professional terminology and concepts. Instructions for the assignments have not always completely been understood correctly. The use of variable grammatical forms and structures is limited. Grammatical errors occur but the main message can be understood. Student has major challenges in correct pronunciation, word and sentence stress and intonation and they may impede intelligibility of the main message. Student fails to communicate clearly and the language produced may be hard to understand. Student may have had difficulties to comprehend the given learning tasks independently. The English language the student produces lacks individual flavor and there are often visible, evident and obvious traces to the use of digital language aids present. Spoken and written competence correspond in some of the assignments.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

H3
Student communicates in a comprehensible manner in all assignments, using also professional language and terminology. Assignments are for the most part done according to the given instructions. The language the student uses is appropriate for the situation and the terms and concepts used are mostly correct. All expressions used in English are not exact to convey the message but the student can communicate the main ideas intelligibly in their own words. The basic grammatical forms are correct. Occasional errors in grammatical forms and structures are not systematic, and they do not impede interaction. There are shortcomings in pronunciation, word and sentence stress and intonation but they do not for the most part obstruct intelligibility of communication. There are some challenges, and yet the student is able to complete the given tasks to demonstrate coping in English. The English language the student produces lacks individual flavor and there some visible, evident traces to the use of digital language aids present. The use of digital means (such as dictionaries and translators) is sometimes obvious. Spoken and written competence correspond in most of the assignments.

H4
Student uses English with ease in all assignments according to the instructions. Student is able to communicate using professional language and terminology both orally and in writing with no misunderstandings. Student has a wide vocabulary knowledge in use and produces language in a clear and well-structured manner. Professional terms and concepts used are appropriate and for the most part correct. There are some shortcomings in grammatical forms and structures but they do not impede comprehension. Pronunciation, word and sentence stress and intonation are mostly correct. The English language the student produces has an individual flavor and there are no visible, evident traces to the use of digital language aids present. Digital means (such as dictionaries and translators) have been used in a clever, moderate manner. Spoken and written competence correspond.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

K5
Student uses English with ease and depth in all assignments following the given instructions. Student communicates professional language and idiomatic, professional expressions naturally and fluently. The nursing terms and concepts used are appropriate and correct for the situation. Grammatical forms and structures are versatile and for the most part flawless. Student communicates clearly in the context of the modules both in terms of writing and speaking. Pronunciation, word choices, sentence stress and intonation are natural and correct. The English language the student produces has an individual flavor and there are no visible, evident traces to the use of digital language aids present. Digital means (such as dictionaries and translators) have been used in a clever, moderate manner. Spoken and written competence correspond.
