Objective

On completion of the course, the student

can interpret and apply the objectives and teaching methods of primary school history and social studies teaching in the basic education curriculum in planning teaching

can critically analyse information from different sources and understand the basic principles of historical research

can apply the basic methods of teaching history and social studies, such as narrative, functional and investigative approaches, and make use of the possibilities offered by the media

have the tools to understand, act and evaluate the society around them

can design and implement a range of teaching activities

Execution methods

Participation in course teaching, group work, completion of assigned tasks and passing the exam.

Accomplishment methods

Face-to-face teaching (LAPE0411): 6h lectures, 15h small group teaching and related independent tasks (6h).

Introduction to the curriculum and its possibilities for planning teaching

Familiarisation with the teaching material and its use in the design of teaching packages, taking into account the student-centred approach to planning

Acquiring and using historical knowledge in different learning environments using ICTs

Familiarisation with old artefacts, exploring the museum environment and its pedagogical potential

Building up a historical picture on the basis of the interview material obtained

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Fail: Some of the tasks have not been completed. The student has not achieved the objectives of the course and does not demonstrate an understanding of the key concepts and methods of the didactics of history and social studies.

Grade 1: The student has achieved the minimum objectives of the course. The performance shows a basic command of the fundamentals of the didactics of history and social studies. This is reflected in the student's ability to demonstrate some understanding of the key concepts and methods of the course. However, performance is limited and superficial and does not fully meet the assignment. There may be some enumerative or one-sided coverage of issues and some errors or ambiguities.

Grade 2:
The student has still achieved the minimum objectives of the course. Performance shows a basic command of the fundamentals of the didactics of history and social studies. Students demonstrate some understanding of the key concepts and methods of the course. However, performance may be concise and superficial and may be poorly relevant to the assignment. The topics may be enumerative or one-sided, and there may be some errors or ambiguities in performance. However, the student will have a basic knowledge and understanding of the subject matter of the course.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Grade 3:
The student has performed well in the course and has responded to the assignment. The student has demonstrated a strong understanding and knowledge of the fundamentals of the didactics of history and social studies. The student is able to demonstrate a deeper understanding of the key concepts and methods of the course. In addition, the student will understand the importance of historical thinking and source work in the teaching of history.

Grade 4:
The student has demonstrated a very strong understanding and knowledge of the fundamentals of the didactics of history and social studies. Performance is excellent, and the student demonstrates in-depth knowledge and skilful application. He/she clearly understands the importance of historical thinking and source work in the teaching of history. In addition, the student has a knowledge and understanding of the main principles of human rights and democracy education. Performance will be of high quality, clear and systematic, and the student will have demonstrated a high level of competence in the subject matter of the course.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Performance is in line with the assignment. Student demonstrates excellent understanding and knowledge of the didactics of history and social studies. Performance demonstrates independent and critical thinking and insight. Student can demonstrate deep understanding of the importance of historical thinking and source work in the teaching of history. The student has an excellent knowledge and understanding of the importance of human rights and democracy education in the Finnish school system.
