Objective

You are able to take considerations for winter trekking safety factors when planning a winter trek in Arctic conditions.
You are able to develop your winter trekking skills and group management skills in winter conditions.
You are able to plan and implement a safe winter trek for different target groups and develop your winter safety skills.

Organizing a winter theme expedition in arctic environment.

Teaching methods

This course is based on the adventure pedagogy methodology and experimental learning.

Taking part to course and implementing expedition in winter conditions. Returning the travel and learning diary.

Further information

You need to have own winter clothing, sleeping back and mattress, back bag and skis. School can provide cooker, snowshoes and tents. If you have no experience traveling on snow it is good idea to take course Winter Sports VR00BE73-3002 Talviliikunta.

A degree student attending the University of Lapland can register free of charge for LUC studies offered by the Lapland University of Applied Sciences, if the studies can be linked to their own degree. Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Level 1
Winter camping skills:
Student guided
- can dress correctly for cold and snowy weather,
- identifies the most common winter hiking equipment,
- can move on easy terrain with snowshoes or skis,
- can plan and carry out a short day trip in winter,
- knows how to build a simple shelter or hut in winter,
- can prepare and enjoys a simple meal outdoors in winter,
- can assess the risks of a winter trip and plan a safe route,
- can perform simple first aid and keep themselves fit for action,
- can act in an environmentally friendly and responsible way on a winter trip.

Level 2
Winter camping skills:
The student is guided and partly independently
- can dress correctly for cold and snowy weather,
- identifies the most common winter hiking equipment,
- can move on easy terrain with snowshoes or skis,
- can plan and carry out a short day trip in winter,
- knows how to build a simple shelter or hut in winter,
- can prepare and enjoys a simple meal outdoors in winter,
- can assess the risks of a winter trip and plan a safe route,
- can perform simple first aid and keep themselves fit for action,
- can act in an environmentally friendly and responsible way on a winter trip.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Level 3
Winter camping skills:
Can plan and carry out a longer winter hike safely.
Knows how to use a map and compass in winter and navigate with them.
Can select and use the right equipment and accessories for a winter trip.
Knows how to navigate in demanding winter terrain on skis or snowshoes.
Can recognise winter hazards, such as avalanche danger, and can act in case of avalanches.
Knows how to make an emergency shelter or shelter if necessary and knows how to give basic help in emergency situations in winter conditions.
Keeps himself/herself fit for a long winter hike, also ensures the fitness of the group.

Level 4
Winter camping skills:
Can plan and carry out a longer winter hike safely taking into account the skills of the participants.
Knows how to use a map and compass in winter and navigate with them.
Can select and use the right equipment and accessories for a winter trip.
Knows how to navigate in demanding winter terrain on skis or snowshoes.
Can recognise winter hazards, such as avalanche danger, and can act in case of avalanches.
Knows how to make an emergency shelter or shelter if necessary and knows how to give basic help in emergency situations in winter conditions.
Keeps himself/herself fit for a long winter hike, also ensures and actively monitors
the fitness of the group.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Level 5
Winter camping skills:
Can navigate safely in difficult conditions and anticipate and prepare for changes in weather conditions while maintaining long-term functional ability.
Can assist other trekkers in an emergency situation, if necessary.
Manages safe navigation in winter conditions, taking into account snow and ice safety.
Ensures the mental and physical safety of the group.
