Objective

Upon successful completion of the course the student is able to:

1. write clear, reasonably fluent texts in English relatively free from mechanical errors,
2. write as a process, with attention to collaborative writing techniques and peer assessment,
3. recognize the common conventions of academic and legal writing,
4. find reliable and relevant information sources
5. apply principles of referencing to their own writing.

Content

The course is designed to further enhance students' legal English skills by developing deeper understanding and mastery of legal concepts. Students will improve their skills by writing and presenting persuasive argumentation on legal journals, academic articles, research and other kinds of legislative documents they have found to effectively communicate complex legal ideas. The course provides the students with an opportunity to recognize the discursive structures commonly used in academic and professional settings in the field of law and to apply these in their own writing.

The course will consist of assignments practicing the relevant genres as well as work on structures and vocabulary as necessary. Methodologically, the emphasis is on writing as a process, with due attention paid to collaborative writing techniques and peer assessment.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Pass/fail, based on class participation, completion of and progress in the writing assignments.
