Objective

Academic writing is a writing course designed to improve the student's ability to recognize and understand the basic structures commonly used in academic writing. The course focuses on strategies that enhance essay development for academic purposes. Throughout the course the students will be required to recognize the differences in rhetorical style used in academic writing and learn to incorporate these differences in their own writing.

After successful completion of the course, the student should be able to
1) reflect on and assess their own skills and recognize areas of development
2) understand the different stages of the writing process and use appropriate writing strategies for each phase
3) use tools and resources to produce relatively fluent, logically sound, argumentative text
4) collaborate in a group of writers who give feedback on each other's work.

Execution methods

Group-oriented learning.

Accomplishment methods

Active participation in class work, regular attendance. Completion of the writing assignments.

Content

The course will focus on the following: the writing process, paragraph development, expository writing, argumentation/persuasion, critical writing, research papers, sentence structure, punctuation, and academic essay development.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

5-1/fail based on class work, written assignments and other tasks and given peer feedback.

Qualifications

It would be beneficial to have completed a basic writing course but it is not required to attend the course.
