Objective

After this study unit
• You know the basic knowledge and skills of winter sports, as well as the related environmental and safety factors.
• You will be able to apply the knowledge and skills you have learned to guiding winter sports.
• You will get to know the main winter sports and the specific features of exercise guidance they require.

Content

Theme 1. Winter sports: sport skills, sport guidance, physical activity in winter

Theme 2. Winter conditions: safety, special features, effects of cold

Location and time

The course is mainly taught daytime face-to-face in Rovaniemi in weeks 6-13. The course starts in Zoom in week 5.

Preliminary timetable plan will be published on October 2023.

Exam schedules

No assessed exam; learning environments have competency tests.

Completion alternatives

Study strategy 1, Daytime learning: students participate in online and face-to-face teaching and small group work according to the timetable.

Study strategy 2, Demonstration of competence: students can demonstrate their previously acquired competence by means of a demonstration of competence. This may take the form, for example, of a certificate of completion of ski instructor courses in alpine skiing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing, as well as mentoring other course participants at an agreed time. This will be agreed with the teacher responsible for the course.

Further information

The course requires clothing suitable for winter sports, cross-country skiing equipment (free, traditional), alpine skiing equipment, snowboard equipment, helmet, snowshoes.

If the student does not have his/her own equipment (alpine or cross-country skis, snowboard, helmet, snowshoes), the student will receive equipment and a lift ticket to the Ounasvaara ski resort free of charge for the days when lessons are organised for the sports in question.

The course is open to all levels of ability, with no entry level requirements for different snow sports.
