Objective
The course provides students with an encouraging environment in which to develop and practice giving presentations for academic purposes. Consideration is given to what makes an effective presentation and then students practice giving presentations of different lengths and focusses. Giving and receiving constructive feedback on presentations is an essential element of the course.
After successful completion of the course, the student will
1) be more aware of the structure and execution of an effective presentation
2) have practiced giving presentations and being an active audience member
3) be experienced in giving and receiving peer feedback on presentations.
Execution methods
Exploring what makes an effective presentation, giving presentations, and giving and receiving constructive feedback on presentations.
Accomplishment methods
Actively participating in classroom sessions, giving required presentations, being an active audience member for others’ presentations, and giving and receiving constructive feedback.
Content
The distinctive features of spoken English and oral presentation. Preparing and giving a presentation; illustrating points effectively, and peer assessment. Students will practice oral skills by running discussions and giving short talks and presentations on topics related to their personal and professional interests.
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
Pass/fail based on attendance, participation and presentations.
Qualifications
Upper secondary school or equivalent.
