Teaching methods

Life Drawing and the rendering of Time

The usual way of making a Life Drawing session is to show a nude model in a motionless position, with some props serving as plastic counterparts to the organic shapes of the anatomy. In other words, the body is seen as a kind of immuable shape where the lines and the surfaces are, visually speaking, of the same substance than the props they are displayed with.

The aim of this workshop would be to do something completely different. It would try to reach the movable within the body, to show the suppleness of the organic. The body would not be seen as still and timeless, but, on the opposite, as something living and temporal. The question, indeed, would be how to do that? The answer could be that the means given by Drawing might lead, for example, to follow two axes: the sequence (like in comics or cinema) and/or the blur (like in motion blur photography); but the students would be welcome to suggest any other possible answer. Thus, to sum it up, the workshop would attempt to explore all the possible ways to express movement within the Life Drawing field. No nude would be needed, and the students would be posing each one at one’s turn, and on a voluntary basis.
