Objective

Opintojakson suoritettuaan opiskelija osaa
- tunnistaa rajallisten luonnonvarojen merkityksen ja kuvata luonnonvarojen tuotanto- ja kulutusketjujen poliittisen ja sosiaalisen luonteen
- analysoida ja eritellä luonnonvaroihin liittyviä mahdollisia ja realisoituneita konflikteja
- eritellä pohjoisten luonnonvarahankkeiden sosiaalisia vaikutuksia ja luonnonvarojen hyödyntämisen sosiaalista toimilupaa eli hankkeiden paikallisen hyväksynnän ehtoja.

Execution methods

Opintojaksoon kuuluu luennot (15 h), loppuseminaari (3 h) ja kirjallisuus sekä itsenäinen tutkimusharjoitus. Tarkemmat ohjeet ja tehtävät Moodlessa.

Content

Kurssilla tarkastellaan luonnonvarojen yhteiskunnallista merkitystä sekä luonnonvarakonflikteja esimerkkitapausten avulla. Valta, vauraus ja hyvinvointi ovat keskeisiä luonnonvaroihin liittyviä yhteiskunnallisia ulottuvuuksia ja kiistankohteita. Luonnonvarat ja niiden ympärille rakentuvat konfliktit nähdään kurssilla monimuotoisina, yhteiskunnallisia suhteita välittävinä kokonaisuuksina, jotka heijastelevat globaaleja muutosvoimia ja niiden vaikutuksia paikallisesti ja alueellisesti. Opintojaksolla tutustutaan myös sosiaalisen toimiluvan käsitteeseen ja sosiaalisten vaikutusten arviointiin.

Workshop 1: Social aspects of mineral exploration and mining

Themes discussed on Thursday 13th of October include:
- social license to explore in mineral exploration
- social license to operate in mining
- stakeholders, locals, and right-owners
- disputes and conflicts

Themes discussed on Friday 14th of October include:
- local contexts and cultures
- sustainability
- social sustainability (versus social license to operate)

Workshop 2: Metal-based devices, supply chains and circular economy
Themes discussed on Thursday 27th of October include:
- materials, humans, and more-than-human world
- natural resources and limits of the growth
- supply chains of minerals and metals
Group work: Each group chooses one object important for everyday life or interesting object for studying; for example car, electric car, mobile phone, laptop, refrigerator, electric stove, led lamp, energy drink can, whatever you can imagine. Time for the group work is included in the lectures (end of the lecture, 12.15 – 15.45). Groups should respond to these questions:
- what metals and how much are used in the object you are studying?
- how much minerals should be mined to get these metals?
- from where these metals are mainly coming from?

Themes discussed on Friday 28th of October include:
- what do metal based devices include and from where the metals come from (presentations of group works, 10 minutes/each).
- concluding remarks from group works (versus Western lifestyle)
- circular economy

The course is organized as two workshops.

The first workshop is about social aspects of mineral exploration and mining, including themes like social license to operate, stakeholder engagement and social sustainability.

The second workshop is about supply chain of metals, circular economy and role of metal devices in everyday life.

Students will do also independent work: reading, writing = studying these issues.

During the workshop there are also visitors from "real world".

Final essay's dead-line is 25.11.2022. More detailed instructions is given later in the autumn.

Pre-assignment, attending workshops, 3-6 articles, final essay.

Hylätty: Suoritus on erittäin puutteellinen tai virheellinen, tai sisältää huomattavia väärinkäsityksiä.

Suoritus on ehjä kokonaisuus, joka sisältää perusteltua omaa ajattelua tai kriittistä pohdintaa. Vastaus on hyvin kirjoitettu tai toteutettu.

Further information

This course consists of preliminary assignment, which must be completed before the start of the course in Webropol. Preliminary assignment should be answered latest 7.10. so that the course can be planned based on responses. Assignment consists of questions, and you don't need to prepare for it in any way – just tell your thoughts.

Second, there are lectures (16 hrs) in Zoom and group work(s). if you are unable to participate in group work, you have to do some extra work individually. During the lectures there are also visitors from the “real world” – and hopefully also from other countries. Lectures are recorded and they can be seen also later.

Third, final essay, around 8-10 pages should be written. Instructions are given in the end of last lecture.
