Objective
During this course, you will
• get to know Lapland University of Applied Sciences as a study environment and you know the services and systems that support your studies.
• develop your higher education readiness and skills as well as your information acquisition skills.
• identify the factors related to your own study ability and well-being and consider how you can maintain your own study ability and how you can take care of your own well-being.
• get to know how to use digital learning tools and make the most of them in your studies.
• familiar with the study guidance system and you know the university's guidance actors.
• get to know the curriculum of your education and create your own curriculum under the guidance.
• get to know the students and teachers in your group.
Content
New degree students at Lapland University of Applied Sciences are oriented to their studies by this course. Course is divided to two parts. The first part of the course (2 ects), you will do independently in Moodle- environment, during the first month of study. In this part of course, you will get to know Lapland University of Applied Sciences as a learning environment. You will consider your learning abilities and acquire the skills and systems needed for your future studies.
The second part of the course (3 ects), will be hold on campus with your own educational fields’ teacher. In the Study Guidance and Curriculum section, you will get to know the other students in your starting group and start planning your own studies. Your own teacher will give the instructions for this part of the course.
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
Approved: The student independently completes a 2-credit course module in the Moodle environment, where they familiarize themselves with the Finnish education system and their own university of applied sciences. They assess their readiness and skills for higher education and learn about ways to take care of their study ability and well-being. They know how to use the services of the university library and the basics of information retrieval. They are aware of the support services and systems available for students and get familiar the guidance personnels at the university of applied sciences. The student can use digital tools for studying. They have prepared a plan for their own studies. The student completes a 3-credit module on campus according to the learning objectives defined by their teacher and submits the related assignments as specified by the teacher.
Rejected: The student does not complete the independent study module or the related assignments. The student does not participate in on-campus teaching or complete the assignments defined by the teacher for the course.
