Objective
Students - are familiar with the basic consepts of Deaf Studies and its traditional and current trends - are able to describe diversity in the Deaf Community - know the implications of major developments in Deaf history for the present day - know the rights of sign language speakers and the legal status of sign languages in Finland and elsewhere - recognises the links between language use and wider social phenomena

Content - Traditional and current trends in Deaf Studies - Basic concepts in Deaf Studies - First wave: including deaf culture, deaf community and identity - Second and third wave: Deaf Space, mobility and intersectionality, among others - Diversity of the Deaf community and sign language - Key developments in Deaf history - The legal status of sign languages in Finland and elsewhere in the world (human rights) - Links between language use and wider social phenomena
Location and time
Opintojakso aukeaa 31.8.2025 ja sulkeutuu 31.7.2026. Opiskelija voi suorittaa opintojakson tehtävät omaan tahtiinsa ennalta mainitun aikaikkunan sisällä. Opintojakso suoritetaan kokonaisuudessaan itsenäisesti verkossa.
Teaching methods
Opetusmateriaalina on luettavia kirjallisuutta ja videomateriaalia. Videoissa on tekstitys tai litteroitu teksti liitteessä. Opintojaksoon kuuluu mm. keskustelutehtäviä, kirjallisia/viitottuja tehtäviä ja kirjallinen tentti. Tehtävät tehdään verkossa itsenäisesti omaan tahtiinsa. Opintojaksolle osallistuminen ei vaadi ennakko-osaamista viittomakielestä ja kuurojen yhteisöstä.
