Objective

Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to: 1) analyze works of poetry, fiction and nonfiction 2) recognize commonly used literary elements and devices in different genres 3) become familiar with basic terminology used for literature analysis 4) view and discuss literature as seen through a theoretical and a personal lens.

Active participation in online teaching sessions as well as activities, tasks, discussions and feedback sessions on Moodle.

Content

The course focuses on the study of literary works written in English from the late 20th century to the present, aiming to explore the diverse themes, styles, and perspectives. The introduction to the course provides an overview of contemporary English literature, discussing major literary movements, themes, influences, and some key literary figures. We will later explore the thematic and genre diversity by reading works from different contemporary authors from English-speaking countries around the world. Students will learn some key terms and vocabulary for analysing and discussing literature and become familiar with literary elements and devices such as plot, character, setting, and point of view, as well as different narrative structures and storytelling techniques.
