Objective

The course provides the student with knowledge of the principle varieties of English in the world, helps him/her identify various regional accents, and presents some basic principles of dialectology and sociolinguistics.

After successful completion of the course the student will
1) have deeper and more systematic knowledge about the most important features of the principle varieties of English in the world
2) be able to identify various regional accents
3) have basic knowledge of some important principles of dialectology and sociolinguistics and be able to apply them in analyzing language use.

Execution methods

Lectures and discussion (36 h), homework (reading and listening), intensive listening work, grammar exercises, three written assignments.

Accomplishment methods

Successful completion of the written assignments, active participation in class work, regular attendance.

Content

Basic principles of dialectology and sociolinguistics, a brief history of the English language, the varieties of English around the world.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

5-1/fail based on the written assignments and class participation.

Qualifications

The student should have a solid understanding of English grammar before taking this course. The course is aimed at learners who have the level C1 of the CEFR (the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
