Objective

The course is designed as an introduction to pedagogical thinking and the teaching of an instrument. The student is able to reflect on their music pedagogical learning and to build their professional competence. They recognise their own strengths as well as the factors influencing their musical path and learning. The student identifies phenomena of pedagogical interaction and familiarises themselves with various environments for instrumental and vocal teaching. The student is aware of perspectives related to encountering and teaching learners of different ages and diverse backgrounds.

Content

Who is the course intended for? • The course can be completed through the open university of applied sciences by any musician, music pedagogue, secondary-level student or music enthusiast with an interest in the subject. • By completing the course, one can fulfil the compulsory pedagogical study module of the autumn semester of the first year of the Metropolia music degree programme, specialising in instrumental or vocal studies. Content: Reflection on one’s own pedagogical path, the values of a music pedagogue, strength-based pedagogy and supporting the learner’s strengths, the tools, competences and field of activity of a music pedagogue, and engaging with learners of different ages.

Qualifications

Previous pedagogical competence is not required, but professional or several years of experience in playing an instrument or singing as a hobby is a prerequisite for some modules.
