Objective

The student knows basic mathematical and statistical analysis methods of business and is able to apply financial mathematics to solving basic business problems based on working life. The student knows the main calculation methods related to finance and investment decisions. The student is familiar with the basic concepts of statistical analysis. The student is able to select suitable statistical methods and use them in describing the pre-collected statistical data.

- Applications of percentages - Indices and time value of money - Interest and compound interest calculations with their applications - Annuities, loans and their comparisons - Basic concepts of statistical analysis and statistical measurement - Distributions and descriptive measures - Basic use of a spreadsheet program’s financial functions and basic features of a statistical software

Location and time

The course is carried out as distance learning and you can study it completely independently. For personal guidance, the course, according to the schedule, has a virtual classroom online.

Materials

Teacher materials in Moodle learning environment. The course materials are in Finnish.

Teaching methods

The course is implemented through flipped learning, where students independently familiarize themselves with the course themes using the provided materials and by solving assignments. Personal guidance is available from the instructor during weekly virtual guidance sessions, where, for example, advice on solving assignments can be obtained. Attendance at the guidance sessions is not compulsory, but participation in the first session is recommended, as the nature of the subject and the detailed course practices are covered there. All course materials (lecture recordings, slides, etc.) and assignments are available from the beginning of the course in the Moodle learning environment. Examinations for the mathematics and statistics sections are completed electronically in the EXAM system. There are no prerequisite requirements for the course.

Exam schedules

The exams in the mathematics and statistics sections are taken in the EXAM system. The dates of the exams and retakes will be announced later. The student can take the exam in both sections a maximum of three times (the actual exam and two retakes).

Completion alternatives

Alternative method of completion: Exams totaling 100 points (mathematics exam 60 points and statistics exam 40 points). NOTE: Both exams must be passed. A minimum of half the maximum score is required for a passing mark (mathematics 30 points and statistics 20 points). If the score in either mathematics or statistics falls below the passing threshold, the student's grade will be a fail (0) regardless of the total number of points.

Student workload

A total of 135 hours, covering self-study, solving assignments, taking exams, and participating in optional virtual tutoring.
