Objective
Upon successful completion of the course, the doctoral candidate will be able1. to understand changes in society, both past and present, and their relationships to the changing nature of work2. to recognize the effects, at both macro and micro levels, of new forms of waged and unwaged work, especially in the discipline relevant to his/her research3. to critically assess alternative theoretical explanations of the transformation of work and to utilise and combine context-related multidisciplinary knowledge4. to analyze the specific implications, challenges and possibilities for Northern communities and individuals.
Content
The course explores challenges in society, working life, and organizations – and correspondingly new potential – created by the changing nature of work and wider societal changes. Changing patterns of work and employment, both waged and unwaged, formal and informal, will be explored through aspects of administration, law, services, placelessness, leadership, ethics, mobility of the work force, complexity of change, and the diversity of communities and cultures.
Qualifications
The course is organised for doctoral candidates at the University of Lapland. The course is part of the doctoral programme Communities and changing work, but doctoral candidates from other programmes are also welcome to the course.

Implementation and methods: Lectures, and reflection on lectures and key texts in a reading workshop, and a seminar.
