Objective

The objective of the course is to provide the students with basic information on Finnish pronunciation, vocabulary, and structure so that they can handle very simple everyday situations in Finnish (e.g. greeting, presenting oneself, shopping).

Having completed the course, the students will be able
1) to tell about themselves and answer simple questions concerning themselves using short sentences
2) to recognize from clear, slow speech a limited number of words and sentences dealing with personal issues or the immediate situation
3) to master basic grammatical concepts and a limited basic vocabulary
4) to achieve level A1.2 of the CEFR (the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Content

All sectors of language skills are practiced on the course: pronunciation, speech, speech comprehension, writing, reading, and grammar. However, the main emphasis is on studying the structures of basic grammar and practicing oral skills and speech comprehension.

Qualifications

The course starts from the very basics.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

5–1/fail based on class work, homework, and the final exam.

The students acquire the course book themselves.
